Adding an island to your kitchen
An island can add work surface, storage and a spot to eat. Here's what to think about before adding one.
Space around the island
You need enough clearance around the island to move and to open doors and drawers. If the room is small, a peninsula can be a better choice than a full island.
How it's used
Think about what the island should do: prep meals, store things, eat, or hold a sink or cooktop. The use decides the size and layout.
The island countertop
The island is often the focal point of the kitchen, so its countertop is very visible. Many people choose a quartz or granite slab with strong veining for the island, sometimes in a different colour from the rest.
